She not only acted as our daughter's nurse, she truly became a confidant.
We encountered countless caring and dedicated individuals during our time at CHOP with our daughter. One nurse in particular, Alexa Palmer provided us with an unparalleled level of care. Our daughter L was admitted to CHOP for the second time, at just 6 weeks of life. She was admitted with an aggressive respiratory virus and pulmonary infection which led to acute respiratory failure. She was on a ventilator for five days and in the PICU for a total of 12. Our world as we knew it felt like it was crashing down. For the first two days of L's stay, I was unable to be with her. I was sick myself and was not cleared by my doctor to visit her in the PICU yet. Any parent can imagine the anguish this caused me. When I was finally able to see my baby, she was in Alexa's care. Alexa met me with kindness and compassion. She not only acted as our daughter's nurse, she truly became a confidant. I would arrive to visit L and unintentionally unload the heavy feelings and fear I was experiencing, on her. I cried, a lot. She allowed me. She provided me with a space to grieve what was happening to my child. She also provided me with hope. She explained things in a clear and compassionate way. She acknowledged my fears but kept me grounded in reality, in what was being done, and in what was within our control. Reminding me "one day at a time". I know a nurse's job is busy and demanding. To Alexa, we were more than just patients, we were more than something on her to-do list. She always entered our room with a smile and a positive demeanor. She dedicated time to answering our questions in ways that we could understand. She never rushed or made us feel as though there was time pressure. To her, we were a priority, and it showed. She even offered to talk to my sister (who is also a nurse) on the phone, to update her on L's care. Alexa was not our nurse for the entire stay but when she was on shift caring for others, she would periodically stop by our room and check in on our daughter (and us). She asked how she was doing, and how we were feeling and let us know she was still rooting for our girl. I hope Alexa can be publicly recognized for her efforts. Especially because I know the work she does daily, is not for recognition, but from a genuine place in her heart to help and heal others. She is an absolute treasure and CHOP is so lucky to have her. I am forever indebted to her for being the first person to greet me during one of the most difficult times of my life as a parent. Thank you.
