I have worked with Yaw since 2019 and have seen how he consistently demonstrates all the attributes of a DAISY Nurse Leader. Yaw works on creating an environment where the qualities of compassion, respect, and professional development are modeled on a daily basis on BHU. For example, Yaw rounds on his staff and patients, but goes beyond the “normal job duties” by forming trusting relationships with his team and therapeutic relationships with his patients. When Yaw walks on the unit, I often see patients making a beeline to go and talk to him. He is exceptional at calming the most agitated patient, and you can often hear him quietly begin by saying “can I make you some tea and you can sit with me?”

Recently, we had a young adult who needed a lot of care once she was discharged into the community, and he was discussing the case with the social worker. He asked to speak with the family when they came for visiting, and I witnessed him speaking with them and providing reassurance. It would be so easy to just have the social worker deal with the family, but Yaw goes the extra mile and makes those special connections. Yaw is a naturally compassionate leader who demonstrates a deep caring for those in his charge.
