Recently, we had a severe Post Partum Hemorrhage (PPH). I am confident that our outcome would have been different if Danielle had not been the nurse assigned to my patient that night. The patient had been in the hospital for 2.5 days, she was also uncomfortable and anxious about this pregnancy given her history. After many conversations, the patient decided to move forward with cesarean delivery. Danielle was very attentive to the patient’s needs, especially her anxiety, and reassured her of her decision while serving as the patient’s advocate. The cesarean delivery was completed, and Danielle was back in the patient’s room while she recovered. I received an urgent message from Danielle that our patient was hemorrhaging and needed immediate attention. I was unavailable at the time, so Danielle immediately called another provider for assistance until I could make it to the room. By the time I made it to the room Danielle and the other provider were actively attending to our hemorrhaging patient. Danielle had all the PPH medications ready to give as well as doing aggressive techniques to remedy the situation. The decision was made to move the patient to the OR, and Danielle acted swiftly without hesitation to get the patient from recovery to the OR. The entire time we were in the OR, Danielle was a great lead nurse leading the team. After measures were unsuccessful the decision was made to call IR. Danielle assisted with the coordinator to contact IR and communicated between IR and me as I was still working to control the patient. The patient was moved back to the recovery room while we waited for IR. While in the room, the decision was made to get an arterial line because the patient would most likely need pressures for her blood pressure. Again, Danielle helped facilitate this procedure while attending to the patient and preparing for transport. After the procedure, Danielle met us in the ICU to give an in-person handoff to the ICU team. Danielle was calm and collected the entire time. I am so grateful that I was working with her that night. Her calm demeanor and attention to detail helped keep me calm and focus on the patient. She was truly a bright light during that dark night. I spoke to the patient 2 days later in the ICU, and the first person she asked about was Danielle. She called Danielle her angel. I couldn’t agree more. I felt compelled to nominate Danielle for the Daisy Award as she is truly an EXTRAordinary Nurse that went above and beyond and saved my patient’s life!
