The remarkable thing is that the staff never boasted about doing this amazing step, they “just did it because that is what they do.”
The patient is an age-friendly patient (85 yr.) and ‘what mattered’ to her was to tell leadership how wonderful she has been treated here and “meet the driver of the bus,” which was a reference to Sparrow Ionia Hospital President, Linda Reetz. Linda met with her to hear the praise she had for SIH for how well she was cared for while she was here. She felt it important to share how well she was treated while in the hospital.
The patient had been a patient for 16 days and during the hospitalization she experienced an unfortunate event, her brother passed away. She could not attend the funeral because she was admitted for breathing difficulties after being diagnosed with Covid 19 and still has heart issues, so attending the funeral in person was not possible. She told the story that the staff on med/surg made it possible to arrange the iPad and teleconference the funeral into her room so she could have closure with his death. The remarkable thing is that the staff never boasted about doing this amazing step, they “just did it because that is what they do.” She is very grateful for that effort. She refers to the whole hospital being turned around from when she was a patient before. She has been here and “something has changed.” The way the hospital is now and the way it was before are astonishing.
She refers to the staff on inpatient as “her angel band” and wants to have her nephew paint a picture of a bus with nurses and call the bus the angel band and have us hang it up at SIH to remember her by. She feels SIH has made her feel like her “home away from home” and told her family she would never go anywhere else for healthcare and is sad that she is leaving to go to sub-acute rehab because of how she was cared for.
