While I’ve had many surgeries in my life, stress and anxiety were always there. I came to Saint Mary’s for a total knee replacement. Sitting in the waiting room with my wife, the anxiety seemed almost unbearable until a nurse came over and asked my name. Even with her mask on, I could see she was smiling. She introduced herself as Julia and explained that she would be getting me ready for surgery.

Julia quickly picked up on my anxiety, so she sat with us and talked for a few minutes. She explained everything that was going to happen and assured me she would be with me for the entire pre-op process. This made me feel somewhat less anxious. Julia walked us back to a patient room and again sat and explained what she was going to do. When I had changed and was laying on the cart, Julia came in with a warm blanket and made sure I was comfortable. Julia then explained the process of starting my IV. Julia asked several questions, and we were able to even laugh a little. Julia started my IV, which I didn't even feel.

During this whole process I became more and more relaxed with Julia's kind words and caring manner. Julia made my surgery experience the most relaxed I have ever had! Julia is a true asset to Saint Mary's. I will request to have her as my nurse when I have my other knee repaired. Thank you, Julia, you are the BEST!
