We talked about things that he had been through in his life, and it made me feel as though I could do anything I set my mind to.
This amazing nurse showed up with a smile on his face, and when he did, it never left him. He went above and beyond for me as his patient in everything he did. Anything I needed, he was there. He was always right on time when it came to my medications. And, when he did bring my meds, he was always so outgoing, so personable, and he took the time to sit down and have conversations with me. That meant so much.

One day I needed a new IV, and he made it easy and painless. He would make me laugh, even though I may not have been in the best mood. He always made me smile with that loving, caring smile of his. We talked about things that he had been through in his life, and it made me feel as though I could do anything I set my mind to.

There should definitely be more nurses like him. His personality and his way with patients are AMAZING! If I could have had him as my nurse every day/night that I was there, I would have loved it. He would always reassure me that everything would work out and be okay. He would always explain every medication I was on, which one he was administering, and why. He is very professional and his energy is out of this world!

When I read the criteria for the DAISY Award, Shawn definitely establishes a special connection with his patients; significantly makes a difference in the life of his patients; shows empathy in all situations; and is an outstanding role model for the nursing profession. That’s why I truly think he deserves the DAISY Award.

Lastly, I’ll end with this. He served our country which made him even more special to me, and that says a lot about who is he! Good luck and continue doing what you are doing, Shawn. You are truly AMAZING! I will never forget you!

From the 8-South Management Team – Shawn has only been working with us for less than 6 months. Since day one, he has demonstrated such a positive demeanor toward patients and staff. He speaks up for safety by often sharing safety stories in huddle. He is responsive to the patient’s needs and concerns, and he is a great team player, often asking co-workers if they need help. When we experienced challenges with lack of available preceptors, guess who stepped up and enthusiastically agreed to precept? It was Shawn. He exhibits leadership qualities by encouraging staff to do the right thing and holding his peers accountable. In doing so, Shawn maintains a positive work environment and always remains professional. He has an energetic personality that radiates to everyone around him. We are happy that Shawn is a part of our 8S-South team, and he is fully deserving of this great honor.
