Sherry most definitely exemplifies Mercy’s core values: compassion, excellence, human dignity, justice, the sacredness of life, and service. Sherry was a true blessing to meet and I’m so thankful she was there many nights taking care of my father. My father had a hemorrhagic stroke and the 2nd CT revealed severe and irreversible brain damage was done. We were told it was possible he would not survive the night. The good Lord is in control of the number of our days and my father passed away a week later.

Even though I am a nurse. I have worked OB my entire nursing career. This situation was not something I have ever been around. I had many questions as a nurse and a daughter. I asked some of the same questions repeatedly. Sherry took the time each night to truly listen and answer my questions in such a loving way, reassuring me of the situation and that my dad was getting the care he needed. She was patient, kind, calm, loving, and always there. She met all our needs, medical, emotional, and spiritual. She went above and beyond to make sure dad looked comfortable and that he was repositioned in the bed as he should be. Even though my dad was unresponsive, Sherry spoke to him and explained everything she did to make him as comfortable as possible. She even took the time to pray with me and my sister-in-law.

Words cannot express how thankful we are for the care Sherry provided for our father during his last days on this earth while in Hospice. I have met some amazing nurses in my life. But Sherry is by far one of the kindest nurses I have ever met. Her presence alone exuberates light and love. Her empathy and compassion were felt by all. I know each night when she was there my father was going to be in good hands. I hope Sherry knows that she is working in the place of her calling, where she is truly meant to be. How special it is to have the opportunity to care for others in their last days. It is an honor and privilege that I know she does not take lightly. I hope that she is rewarded for the extraordinary care that she provided for my dad, and she knows just how special she is and what a blessing she was to my family and many others, I am sure.
