This may be "just how Nada is" but I think it's more than that. It's special.
The reasons Nada is a DAISY Nurse Leader are almost impossible to count--much like the stars. Well-known motivational author Simon Sinek said, "A star wants to see herself rise to the top. A leader wants to see those around her become stars." What is so special about this quote and why it is so fitting for Nada, is that though I, of course, see her as a star, she sees and treats everyone around her as a star. This isn't just limited to RNs, it extends to all hospital staff, physicians, patients, and visitors. On any given shift, you might find Nada, tie-die sweatband in place, rounding with the staff on the unit, asking, "How are you doing? Can I get you anything?" combined with any number of affectionate nicknames she may have come up with. Or perhaps you might catch her, leading a "Mindful Minute" of deep breathing during Huddle or sharing a "Friday Funny" joke for some therapeutic laughter. Sometimes I find it hard for Clinical Supervisors to get Applause Cards from patients because most of the time they interact with staff, but not Nada. I regularly receive Applause Cards from patients thanking her for stopping by and addressing their concerns. I know the staff all give a sigh of relief when she's on as well: she has their backs, and they aren't alone. This may be "just how Nada is" but I think it's more than that. It's special. Nada says she has her dream job--most days. She loves being able to help patients, and help staff help patients. She will admit that she has left and come back to Saddleback, but that she is here to stay. This hospital is special, and special to her, much like the staff she supports. Even if some days she feels like she's fighting for a call back, a resource, a plan, whatever it may be, she attacks each day with conviction, passion, and courage, never shying away from a difficult conversation if that's what it takes. In all that she does, Nada inspires me to be a better manager. She is a true DAISY Nurse Leader.
