My mom had somebody who got her, who wanted to understand and seemed to intuitively understand who she was.
My mom went in with sepsis and had a significant amount of pain due to her scoliosis as well as diarrhea from various antibiotics. She had many good nurses and doctors, but one nurse stands out. Shantel went above and beyond. She “got” my mom. She called her “boss.” She made my mom smile on the most difficult days of her life. Her sense of humor and compassion made a difference to my mom and to all of us. She stayed late to help put my mom’s catheter in even when she wasn’t officially my mom’s nurse. She listened to me and helped me get answers to questions. As the oldest daughter, I was the person my mother counted on the most, and I felt very comfortable counting on Shantel. When I knew she was on, I felt more comfortable leaving my mom. My mom had somebody who got her, who wanted to understand and seemed to intuitively understand who she was. It meant a lot to me. My mom went home to hospice and died a few days later. Although I am heartbroken, I am grateful for Shantel’s humor, compassion, and nursing skills. Thank you.
