I think Veronica played a big part in opening him up to the care and affection he received even later in his hospital stay.
Veronica went above and beyond in caring for a patient that I ended up caring for after her. Mr. K had a serious complication related to his treatment for previous cancer; his overall condition ended up being incurable and I was the internal medicine resident caring for him in the last weeks of his life. She had been with him through many transitional conversations and decisions earlier in his stay and kept up with his condition and situation on a daily basis. When things were looking bad, she was one of the visitors to bring him his favorite foods and eat with him. She brought him Mexican Cokes and ordered in pizza for lunch one day as her lunch break on shift, and the first thing he did when I walked in the room the next day was to tell me all about his lunch with Veronica. He was beaming and felt so loved. I now know from the family that he had been a very isolated person who had not been close to many in his later years. His time at Seton Main was on many levels relational, open, and filled with affection that was new for him. He reflected on how cared for he felt despite the fact that he was so scared. I think Veronica played a big part in opening him up to the care and affection he received even later in his hospital stay. She provided exemplary care that went far beyond the role of bedside nurse and she deserves every commendation. I am so grateful to have seen how much impact it made on this patient and family.
