Chelsea frequently calls from home to check on her patients, she stays late to make sure all her patients are clear on their instructions, and appointments and that their questions and concerns have been addressed to the best of her ability.
Chelsea, in so many ways, demonstrates care that is totally through the lenses of her patients. Her ability to navigate paths to provide the same, equitable care for all patients is beyond admirable and selfless.

She recently cared for a patient having major surgery. She completed her pre-op care and in reflection of the patient chart after realizing the hemoglobin was low. She discovered the patient had testing done that revealed a blood disorder. Upon her review, she realized the patient did not know about it as her appointment had not been scheduled. She escalated this to the care team. The physicians involved agreed hematology clearance was needed. When the blood bank received the samples, they realized our lab could not do the screening necessary. The patient had to return several times for additional lab draws to be sent to the Red Cross for screening. This RN coordinated these efforts and kept everyone aware. The patient obtained the clearance she needed. Although her surgery was delayed, the patient was able to have surgery and have the blood products ready, available, and with extra on reserve. The patient did very well and was extremely complimentary to this RN.

This RN later cared for a patient without insurance or sufficient funds to always be able to manage her healthcare needs. The patient had cardiac disease and had not been able to afford any follow-up care in over 10 years. The patient was scheduled for major surgery and there was concern from this RN and anesthesia that the patient's heart needed to be evaluated first. While trying to arrange this care, the patient spoke up that she could not afford to do that. This RN escalated that to her care team & the initial decision was to proceed with a patient refusal of cardiac testing. She had never made that a plan in the past, so she escalated it to her manager. Quickly, the care team met, and a plan for the patient to see our community healthcare group was made. The patient was able to see the cardiac provider and have her heart evaluated under ultrasound for functionality. This case was done as planned and the patient tolerated it well.

This RN frequently calls from home to check on her patients, she stays late to make sure all her patients are clear on their instructions, and appointments and that their questions and concerns have been addressed to the best of her ability. She has been in the surgical setting for quite some time and feels her home has been found in PAT. We are grateful to have her on our team and value her presence at the bedside. She exemplifies the BSMH values daily.
