Gideon was like a guardian angel watching over me the entire night.
I am writing to give recognition to an extraordinary, kind, and caring nurse, Gideon Nyambiya, who was my nurse during a night shift at Inova Fairfax Hospital. I had the fortune of being under his care when I was transferred from the Women's ward to the stroke ward that evening. I had just had Prolapse surgery the day before, but when it was detected that my sodium levels had dropped, the Women's ward did not have the resources to provide a sodium drip bag. Therefore, I was transferred to the stroke ward to receive the necessary treatment.
At that point, I was in great pain, weak, dizzy, and vulnerable. Gideon was like a guardian angel watching over me the entire night. He was so gentle, protective, patient, and compassionate. After caring for me in the room, he would make an effort to leave my door slightly open and stay right outside in the hall where he made himself available at a moment's notice when I called for him. I never had to wait when I called the nurse's button. When I needed to use the bathroom, he not only helped me to get there safely, but he gave me privacy, left the bathroom door slightly open, and listened. Once, he detected that my urine was not flowing properly. He got me safely back in bed and then went immediately to get the necessary meds to correct my problem.
On another occasion, I was unable to reach the nurse's call button and was struggling to get out of bed in order to use the bathroom. Gideon, who was just outside my door, heard me stirring and came rushing in to help me. Another time, I was having difficulty feeling very bloated. He encouraged me to go for a little walk down the hallway to help relieve the gas, making sure that I did not over-exert myself. I remember telling Gideon what a kind and good person he was and that his mother must be very proud of him. This caring gentleman with his knowledge of my medical needs, his vigilance, compassion, and gentle spirit, has made a lasting impression on my life. I not only feel that he helped and protected me in a time of great need, but the Divine Providence gave me the opportunity to meet such a beautiful soul. Gideon is one in a million, and you are very fortunate to have him on your medical staff. I hope the best for Gideon, and that he is appreciated and recognized for his knowledge, compassionate nature, and the great spirit that he is.
