Without hesitation, Lilly told the patient that she would sit with her and keep her company so she wouldn't be as scared.
Lilly has always shown care and compassion for her patients. She is very calm and patient which is vital when caring for patients who have had a neurological insult. Lilly took care of a patient that had come in and was having respiratory difficulties. After multiple days with us in the Neuro ICU, the patient and her family decided that it would be best if we shifted our goals of care toward making the patient comfortable.
The night before we were intending to initiate comfort measures for this patient, she expressed to Lilly that she was getting scared. The patient did not have family that stayed with her overnight and as her respiratory status declined, she also started to become slightly confused. Without hesitation, Lilly told the patient that she would sit with her and keep her company so she wouldn't be as scared. Lilly moved a chair and a computer on wheels into the room and sat next to the bed while she charted on both of her patients. She only left the room when she needed to care for her other patient or get medications, always reassuring the patient before she left that she would be right back.
Lilly showed a great deal of compassion and understanding for this patient. I am very proud to have such a wonderful nurse working in this unit and think that she exemplifies what it means to truly care for people when they are most vulnerable.
