Beth’s patience and the extra time she spent finding the largest and best vein at the bedside made a huge difference in the care of this child.
Elizabeth Picard is a DAISY Nurse because of the amazing difference she made in the care of my patient and the impact she had on the entire admission. When the IV team goes the extra mile it can literally change the course of care for our patients. I had a direct admission come to the floor on 4 East. The family had arrived from two hours away in the morning and had to wait for a bed on our unit to open up. They didn’t arrive to the floor until 12:30. The team requested a “blood drawing IV” which as nurses we all know is a hit or miss. But I told Beth this and she tried very hard, using ultrasound, to find the largest vein possible, all the while talking to the 4-year-old patient and Mom making them both feel comfortable. It was without a doubt one of the most “beautiful” IV placements in terms of both its success but also the interaction with the family. There ended up being some complications with the admission and having the supplies we needed for the patient’s feeds. There was significant stress on the medical team as well as the family. But the ONE thing that went off without a hitch, the one thing that went smoothly and perfectly was the “free flowing blood drawing IV” for the patient who needed labs every four hours overnight. Beth’s patience and the extra time she spent finding the largest and best vein at the bedside made a huge difference in the care of this child. I can’t express just how much of a difference she made in the care of this patient.
