I have worked with Sara on 5K for several years now, and all of her patients can tell you what a fantastic nurse she is. Sara is quick to take on a patient with complicated care needs and/or complex social situations. I am always amazed at her ability to put the patient and families first in every situation.

Recently, I watched as she advocated tirelessly for a patient at the end of life, always considering the need to keep the patient comfortable and the patient's family calm and relaxed. Taking care of patients at the end of life is no easy task. Sara used her nursing skills to the best of her ability, spending time to help bathe, and pamper the patient, providing him with great dignity in his last days. I saw what a difference her patience and warmth made to a mother who was losing her child. Sara never hesitated when this family called upon her. I watched as she celebrated with him, with every small joy, whether that was fresh clean sheets on his hospital bed or finding the best regimen to control his continuous pain. She helped him to stand, and she laughed with him at inside jokes made during the many hours she spent caring for him and his family.

The patient's mother spoke of Sara in the highest regard, sharing how grateful she was for Sara's support in the most difficult days of her life. Sara's passion for St. Jude and our mission shines so brightly and fosters the connections she shares with our patients and their families. I am so proud to work with such a genuine and caring nurse. I strive to be as compassionate and generous in my nursing practice.
