Kimberly stayed after her shift and came back to be with me

My mother was moved to Palliative Care/Hospice at Baptist South in November. Kimberly was my mother’s nurse for her final 2 days, Nov. 5th and 6th. When she came in the morning of the 5th, she and her student told me they were there to make my mom as comfortable as they possibly could and that they would do as much or as little as I wanted them to do as not to cause her any more pain. They bathed her and redressed her wound and turned her with so much care. They were slow and methodical so they didn’t do anything that would cause her to be in any more pain than she already was.

On Sunday when Kimberly’s shift was almost over, she was explaining to the night nurse how my mom was doing and they both knew that the end was very near. Both she and the night nurse reassured me that if I needed anything at all to just come and get her and that when that time came, I didn’t have to be in the room or they would come in with me. My mom took her last breath at 7:35 PM on Nov. 6th. I turned around and Kimberly was standing behind me holding my shoulder. She stayed after her shift and came back to be with me. I will never forget that or her. She is doing what she was meant to do.
