Rebekah reassured the patient that she could stay in the lobby while she continuously worked with social services to assist the patient.
Rebekah has displayed DAISY Award characteristics for a number of years. She consistently does not recognize the excellence of herself. I have personally witnessed her fight for the right to die with dignity. I have seen her compassionately reassure numerous patient families and tell them it was okay. I have watched her cry with domestic violence victims. I have watched her fiercely reassure them and tell them that it is not their fault. I have watched her stand up to family that wanted to abandon their teenagers. Most recently, I watched her with a homeless patient. This patient had no reason to be in the emergency room other than needing warmth. The patient had recently committed petty crimes to get arrested so she could get out of the cold. Since she had no medical reason to be seen in the emergency room, she was discharged. It was raining and very cold that day. Rebekah attempted to get her placed in a shelter, but due to the limited resources in Brazoria County, there was no local shelter available. To add to the matter, this is occurring during COVID which has already taxed our available shelters. Rebekah reassured the patient that she could stay in the lobby while she continuously worked with social services to assist the patient. The patient eventually got placement. There is not a lot of support given to the emergency room regarding Social Services, and many times the nurses are faced with making the choice between being compassionate advocates while protecting the hospital from liability.
