I and many others use Rebecca as the example of how to go beyond the tasks of our job back to providing compassionate care.
Rebecca's peer submitted her nomination through our online form, speaking to the four nomination criteria:
Clinical Skills: Rebecca has years of experience combined with strong technical skills and a great teaching ability making her a top choice for questions and aids when providing aid. For example, our unit has been ushering in more and more patients with chest tubes and tracheostomy tubes which is new or "it’s been a while" for many of our staff. Rebecca is the first to be called for help and always makes time to come in the room with the RN and provide hands-on training and observation.
Compassionate Care: Rebecca exudes genuine empathy, warmth, and compassion for both her coworkers and patients. She does this in tone, posture, and active listening. When you talk to her she stops what she is doing and looks at you, asks questions, gives comfort if needed, and helps with solutions. When some of our patients suffering from dementia and delirium become active at night she comes into the room with an atmosphere of calm and reassurance. She helps alleviate the stress of both the staff and the patients.
Exemplary Service: I and many others use Rebecca as the example of how to go beyond the tasks of our job back to providing compassionate care. She does not talk poorly about the patients outside the room but instead walks in thinking the best with the intention of giving her best. She brings the unit's moral up with encouragement, compliments, laughs, and homemade goodies.
Continued Commitment: Rebecca practices continued commitment by furthering her education beyond what is required, skills, and standard of practice. She does this by educating herself through continuing education opportunities (CEUs), getting the medical surgical certification, being on Unit Council meetings, checking off competencies of other nurses, and putting together educational information that the unit can benefit from.
