Later, I learned that not only I was having a hard time that day, but most of all our nurse in the unit, and Anne as not only assisting me but all of them.
I am a new graduate nurse at our cardiovascular unit, and at the beginning of our shift this past Wednesday we started our day understaffed, and we knew the day would be challenging. At the start of our huddle meeting our charge nurse Anne gave us some words of encouragement and mentioned to us to please rely on and ask for help when we needed it.

As I started my shift, a lot of issues and complications arose, my phone rang every 10 minutes, and I found myself going from room to room. Anne checked on me periodically and offered herself to assist me. As I was frustrated, the way she presented herself was in a very understanding manner of the situation, but also showing that yes, she can help me. I gave her some tasks to do, and she finished them and reported back to me how did my patients do.

Later on, she reminded me of some of the resources I had at my disposal so that I don't burden myself throughout the day. The day continued, and she checked on me to make sure I take my lunch, which I found very caring of her. The shift continued to pose challenges, and she arranged a group of nurses and herself to assist place an NG tube and starting an enema on my patient, which are always challenging tasks, not only skills-wise but challenging for the patient himself. The patient needed the right words of encouragement and caring manner, which Anne had, and I was able to observe and learn.

After all this, she allowed me to have some uninterrupted time to chart my patients, while she checked on my patients. Things started to settle around the unit, and by 5 pm or 6 pm, we were finally able to breathe a little bit and continue to provide great care for our patients, despite the circumstances. Later, I learned that not only I was having a hard time that day, but most of all our nurse in the unit, and Anne as not only assisting me but all of them. She possesses a high level of leadership that shines and thrives under difficult situations. I get a sense of security and feel cared for when I am on shift with her here at Mayo. Her passion for nursing is admirable, and I am happy and proud to work under her.
