David remained with the patient long into the night; hours after his shift had ended.

Baptist South ventured into the world of ECMO one year ago and has not looked back since. To date, there have been a total of 8 ECMO cannulations. This being the most critical, complicated, lifesaving therapy we’ve known so far, it goes without saying the respect that’s required for this machine, catheters, and everything that could possibly go wrong. With that being said, our most recent cannulation was performed outside the walls of this hospital.

When it came time for the assignment of what nurse could handle this – David Morgan answered the call. He traveled to Prattville Hospital, assumed care of a critically ill 33 year old patient and assisted the team to successfully cannulate for ECMO, initiate therapy, and then transport the patient to Baptist South. David remained with the patient long into the night; hours after his shift had ended to ensure the patient had everything he needed as well as the nurses taking over for him.

Despite all of the clinically challenging tasks required, he took the time to make sure the family had all the information about visiting hours and what to expect when they see their loved one for the first time after initiating ECMO. David most definitely went above and beyond in this situation, but like a true “DAISY” nurse, he would likely tell you, “I was just doing my job, like anyone would’ve done in the same situation.” David Morgan is truly an extraordinary nurse and CVICU is lucky to have him on their team.
