Vilma provided excellent care for my grandmother during her hospitalization. We were admitted under some scary and unique circumstances and so it was comforting to have a nurse that was not only knowledgeable but genuinely caring. My grandma had some tough sleepless nights. I’m usually with her basically 24/7 so she had anxiety every night I had to leave when visiting hours were over. Throughout the night I would get calls, or I would call and check on her status and if she was sleeping. Vilma was her regular day nurse, and it really eased my grandma to see a familiar face each morning. To my surprise, my grandma and Vilma became pretty close. Vilma knew all about our family Grandma’s cat and our daily routines outside of the hospital. My grandma even found out that Vilma was raised without a grandma, and she inducted her into our family by allowing her to call her “Ba”. Their bond was comforting because I was glad to know my grandma could rest when Vilma was around. But what impressed me most was Vilma’s patience to repeat and reassure me every step of the way. When Grandma’s heart rate dropped in the 30s and her blood pressure was low Vilma made sure to help make myself and Grandma comfortable and ease our anxiety. She made sure to triple-check on all of her medications because she was having severe allergic reactions to multiple medications. She even found one of the medications was the wrong brand and made sure the orders were changed. My experience with care for my grandparents in the past wasn’t necessarily negative but this experience was certainly the most positive.
