I have a very special story about a nurse who truly embodies the definition of nursing. Liz Newton was taking care of a very sick individual with a multitude of complex issues and was giving him beyond exceptional care. Unfortunately, because he was very sick he ended up requiring further care in the ICU. However, Liz did such an excellent job of providing diligent, personalized care to this patient. Despite his acuity (and the fact that she probably had a multitude of other tasks requiring her attention) she remained by his bedside and advocated very strongly for him to receive the higher level of care that he needed. She provided essential information to us (the ICU team) that could only be obtained through her attentive nursing care. At no point did she seem flustered, overwhelmed, or frustrated with the situation and did everything she could to facilitate a safe and smooth transfer to the ICU for this patient. Even once the patient came to the ICU she provided care to the family, she remained with the wife helping ease her worries while she waited to hear how their loved one was doing. Liz went above and beyond to provide care in this situation and from what I hear it sounds like this is the norm for her and she deserves to be recognized for all of her hard work and passion for her job.
