We had a patient who came in fully dilated and desired a non-medicated delivery. Zarina was her primary nurse. When we receive a patient who is close to delivering the baby a team of nurses and physicians are coming to assist with the situation. The patient was in a lot of pain and was struggling to listen to the staff. Zarina then asked everyone to lower their voices so the patient could hear her. She gently approached the woman in labor and asked her to focus on her voice. She was about to guide her on how to push and deliver the baby. The patient gave her her full attention and started pushing. After a couple of pushes the baby came out with no complications. The patient was relieved, happy, and thankful to Zarina for helping to calm her down in such a stressful situation and focus on the delivery.

One hour after the delivery Zarina was getting the patient ready to go down to the post-partum floor. After doing one last fundal check to look for extra bleeding Zarina noticed the patient passed multiple clots. She analyzed the situation and requested that a physician come to the room. When the physician came and more fundal pressure was done they realized the bleeding was more serious. Zarina communicated with the doctor about the need for a uterotonic in the room and immediately requested to bring one to the room. More blood clots came out and the physician decided to perform a bedside ultrasound with manual removal of the clots. The ultrasound showed multiple clots in the uterus. At this point, everyone in the room became more nervous including the patient and her family. Zarina very calmly assessed the situation and called out for the hemorrhage cart and initiated a hemorrhage protocol. Within a minute a whole team came into the room. A question of possible D&C was up in the air. After several more uterotonics, the patient stopped bleeding and remained in the room with her newborn baby and family. She was very grateful we were able to control the bleeding without her needing to go through a D&C.

Thanks to Zarina's quick situational assessments calming personality and amazing self-control in stressful situations this patient's life was saved. Zarina is a truly inspirational nurse and we are very grateful to have her with us.
