She delivered the care that I needed at the saddest time in my life.
I came into Accident and Emergency at 10 weeks pregnant. I was experiencing bleeding, and low blood pressure and our hearts were broken. When Ella the nurse arrived to look after me, I had been in hospital for over 6 hours and had had numerous internal inspections, my husband was sleeping. Ella had been on shift for about half an hour, it was a Saturday morning and I believe there'd been quite a lot of drama on in A&E already. Ella was calm and kind. I cried and cried. Ella was there to change me, to clean me up. She delivered the care that I needed at the saddest time in my life. She even got me softer tissues to cry into! Ella went above and beyond to make sure I was okay. She checked I was as comfortable as possible. Never once did she try and suggest "everything would be okay" - she just let me cry and was there - even when she was clearly run off her feet.
The following day, after being discharged, I was rushed back in following another drop in blood pressure. On arriving in the A&E waiting room, Ella literally swept my husband and me up and got us into a room for additional care. I had to stay another night. The impact Ella has had on my experience in hospital is hard to put into words. At a time when I felt scared, lost, and broken - both physically and mentally - I could not have asked for a better person to care for me. She reflects the values you want every nurse to uphold. At every stage, Ella made sure I was cared for. There was nothing anyone could have done to fix things, but Ella cared for me at the time when I needed it most, and I will be eternally grateful.
