Kelly went above and beyond to make sure our daughter, V was well-cared for and prepared.
Kelly is a remarkable nurse who has forever left an imprint on our family. From the presurgery phone call to discharge, she was at our side the entire time. I work with nurses daily and I know pediatric nurses are a very special group of people, however, Kelly went above and beyond to make sure our daughter, V was well-cared for and prepared. On the presurgery call, she armed me with so much good information about the pre-op eval that would determine whether surgery could occur. We also discussed ways to ensure V was staying hydrated after surgery including a reward system and some small prizes and incentives. My husband immediately went out and purchased a few small rewards to have on hand. On arrival, she introduced herself to us and it was great to put a face with a voice! That was something we rarely get to do at Children’s as phone triage is sometimes separate from floor nurses. Once we were in a room, she immediately connected with V, building trust and verbalizing and explaining V’s questions/concerns. V went into day surgery with a head cold and we knew there were many risk factors being weighed by the MDs but Kelly ensured our questions were answered. Throughout the day she was positively encouraging V and when recovery took longer than expected and the rooms of day surgery grew dark we felt like Kelly and a few other nurses stayed until we were discharged. It wasn’t her responsibility but she walked us out and we said our goodbyes. We believe Kelly is a DAISY Nurse, not because of one thing she did, but the multiple ways she went above and beyond on to ensure our child was well-cared for emotionally and physically. She is a remarkable representative of Children’s Wisconsin and nurses like her are what set your health system apart from any others in the state. The continuum of care she provided created a relationship built on comfort and trust. This is the first time we’ve ever had that type of care at Children’s and I will say it made a world of difference. Thank you Kelly for all you do and continue to do for children and families in Wisconsin. Also know that you inspired a little six-year-old to one day be a nurse like you!
