Dustin would always follow up with reassuring words, to make sure that everyone continued to feel comfortable.
The first few months following my diagnosis were both emotionally and logistically extremely challenging. This was particularly the case given that I could not bring family members along to visits, due to Covid19 restrictions. Luckily for me, Dustin is always there as a reliable and compassionate helping hand. He is very attentive and immediately recognizes if I am feeling worried or anxious. As English is not my first language, he also helps me cross the language barrier—helping me express my questions and concerns with my doctors and reinterpreting the doctors’ words with simpler language if I feel confused. He pays attention to the little things, and waits patiently with me when results are delayed, or if the doctor is running late. If I experience any extraneous discomforts or symptoms, Dustin does not try to explain them away, but instead communicates with my oncologist to see if I should see an appropriate specialist. The early conversations between my doctors and my family members—which were limited to phone calls due to Covid—were difficult at times. Dustin would always follow up with reassuring words, to make sure that everyone continued to feel comfortable. There was also a change in my primary oncologist, due to the retirement of my first oncologist. I was nervous about having a new doctor, but I was always reassured by the thought that Dustin would be there to help. Dustin is equally helpful beyond the walls of the clinic. He is consistently easy to reach over the phone or by email and always responds very quickly and reliably helping to answer any questions, make new appointments, or get medication refills taken care of. Dustin is a kind-hearted, detail-oriented, and responsible person. He is very passionate about his job and takes pride in what he does. He was always trying his absolute best to make me feel comfortable and helped. Having Dustin as my nurse has been one of the important factors in making me feel so fortunate to be receiving my treatment at the City of Hope.
