Vickie is one of those people whose aura makes everyone around her feel special, appreciated, and respected. On a recent Monday Vickie was in charge. She checked on every staff member in the department, kept the Pre-Op running smoothly, helped facilitate 2nd stage needs, and stayed late to make sure everyone, patients and staff alike, was getting the care they needed. While none of those singular things may sound extraordinary the fact that Vickie can do them all with grace and charm is extraordinary. She put in IVs, transported patients, cheerleaders her coworkers, and piloted the pre-op! She leads from within, not in front. Her enthusiasm and love of her job carry over to anyone working with her, completely changing the morale. Patients light up when they speak with her, she is funny, smart, and most importantly full of knowledge. I watched her speak with a very anxious, tearful, and worried patient. Vickie was never rushed; she spoke to her as if she had known her for years and they were having a cup of coffee instead of having major surgery. The patient immediately responded to her energy and relaxed. She is the ambassador for surgical access. As her coworker, she is what I strive to be on a daily basis.
