Bassam took it upon himself to go downstairs to the cafeteria and purchase a meal of burgers and fries for all the children.
Bassam was assigned to a patient with end stage heart, liver, and kidney disease. His condition was deemed irreversible, and he was not a surgical candidate. The decision was made to wean the Impella and remove it during his shift which would ultimately lead to his patient’s demise. This patient had five children under the age of thirteen at the bedside. A total of eleven family members. The children were complaining to their mother about being hungry. It was known and apparent that the family was financially struggling. Bassam took it upon himself to go downstairs to the cafeteria and purchase a meal of burgers and fries for all the children. He really went above and beyond.
