Last Thursday I had the opportunity to round on each of the units that Shannon oversees. Shannon did not provide direct patient care but she poured into every single caregiver we met while rounding. Shannon knew each caregiver’s name and something personal about them. Many times when leaders round you see fear or discomfort, but Shannon’s caregivers had smiling faces and welcoming arms. Shannon’s transformational leadership style has led to better staffing for her units and increased retention. While this is an indirect impact on patient care, we know that caregivers who feel valued and engaged provide remarkable patient care leading to the best possible outcomes.
