Amber pulled the chair next to my bed and sat down and explained everything to me in terms I can understand.
I came to the hospital for what I thought was a simple UTI which turned into me needing drains placed on my kidneys. Needless to say, I was stressed and overwhelmed about the days to come after I discharge home. I’m a very independent woman so to have that taken away from me was rough. I became depressed while in the hospital. During my 7-day stay at the hospital, I had the pleasure of having Amber as my nurse for 3 days. The first time meeting her she was pleasant and sweet first thing in the morning. She came in and introduced herself, wrote her name on the board, and asked if I needed anything or was in pain. I lied and said no I’m fine. Nurse Amber said, “Don’t be a pain warrior, I can see it in your face you’re in pain and uncomfortable”. I eventually told her I was and I did not want to become addicted to pain medication because I had never been on it before. Amber pulled the chair next to my bed and sat down and explained everything to me in terms I can understand. I knew she had other patients to see but she sat down and talked to me like a person and not just a patient. She took her time with me. Never once did she seem irritated with her job or having to help me get to and from the bathroom. Every time she entered the room you can tell she was smiling underneath her mask. She constantly checked on me to make sure I was eating and if I needed anything. She made me feel comfortable. The day before I was discharged I told her how I was nervous about going home and managing my tubes. Amber showed me how to drain my tubes, then proceeded to encourage me to drain them, with her observing me to make sure I was doing it right and to answer any questions I had. She showed me how to properly care for them. Before the end of her shift, she came to tell me goodbye she would not be back in to discharge me. She wished me the best of luck and offered me some encouraging words before she left for the evening. I had great care during my hospital stay from the cleaning ladies, dietary, doctors, nurses, etc. Amber however stood out. She sees things others do not see and has a calming spirit about her. Her knowledge as a nurse and being able to relate it to me in a way I can understand is something I’ll never forget. She’s compassionate, empathetic, nurturing, and intelligent. Everything you would want in a nurse.
