She worked diligently to reunite this patient and his family and facilitate commitments from this family to ensure he had the support that would qualify him to be a candidate for his life-saving transplant.
I had the pleasure of working with an amazing person who has earned recognition as an Extraordinary Nurse. Sue has consistently shown her compassion, caring, and knowledge many times throughout her career caring for patients in many capacities. Recently I experienced this directly as I witnessed her ability to make miracles happen for a struggling patient. We had a middle-aged patient in need of a liver transplant due to a genetic issue. He had been struggling through red tape for two years as his condition declined rapidly and still getting a “no” for transplant because he did not have the “family support needed.” Sue implemented her superpower and went to work right away. This amazing nurse, in a very short time, was able to build a meaningful connection with this very ill patient. She accessed every resource in her toolbox and was able to bring together a collaborative effort from this medical team (physicians, nurses, case managers, and even transplant specialists at another facility) to elevate this patient’s needs. She worked diligently to reunite this patient and his family and facilitate commitments from this family to ensure he had the support that would qualify him to be a candidate for his life-saving transplant. She went further above and beyond contacting multi-state services to ensure he had the medical coverage, appropriate housing, transportation, medical support, and caregiver support so this patient could have a second chance at life. Because of her knowledge, due diligence, compassion, and absolute above-and beyond-efforts, along with her experience in nursing and case management, she was able to provide hope, dignity, and fulfillment of life not only for this patient and his family but for her peers around her who witnessed and heard of her exceptional work. She was a true display of how one nurse can make such an extraordinary difference in the lives of the people we serve.
