This nurse took exceptional care of our dad before he passed away. She went above and beyond to make sure we had memories to cherish during our last moments. My dad was in the ICU and had reached the end. We had to make the difficult decision to remove life support. We lost my mom 4 years ago and my sister was planning a wedding for later this year. She didn’t want to get married without any of my parents, so we got permission to just do something small in the hospital room. It was supposed to be just my sister and her husband, an officiant, myself, and my sisters’ children, but they allowed us to bring a few more people, like my husband and kids. It was going to be a quick in and out thing just to get it done, but when we showed up, his nurse Kandy had gone out of her way to decorate the entire room for my sister. She set my dad’s bed up so he could “watch” the ceremony. She played music, organized everything, and made it so special. The next night we removed support and agreed to donate his organs. This was Kandy’s night off. Not only did she show up to support us, but on her night off she volunteered to be the OR nurse with my dad through the entire process. She told him how loved he was until he took his last breath, and she showed up for us and him when she didn’t have to. We couldn’t have asked for someone more wonderful during a time so hard for us. She deserves every award possible. She’s what every nurse should aspire to be. Nothing will ever express how grateful we are for Kandy but I hope this award will be a start. She deserves it and so much more!
