The mother of eight-year-old shares how Mona made homemade treats and brought in sunflowers to cheer her daughter up, making her stay a little easier and more bearable.
Maya Angelou stated, “At the end of the day, people won’t remember what you said or did; they will remember how you made them feel. The Spring 2023 DAISY Honoree is Mona Buffum WOCN.

The patients under Mona Buffam’s care agree. Mona has left an indelible mark on those she cares for through small acts of kindness and thoughtfulness. A patient writes, “She is attentive, available, responsive, friendly, and personable.”

The mother of eight-year-old shares how Mona made homemade treats and brought in sunflowers to cheer her daughter up, making her stay a little easier and more bearable.

Another shared a story of how Mona brought the Lights a Glow to her since her anticipated trip to the annual Boothbay Light show was interrupted by an unexpected hip fracture. The patient explains how Mona was her cheerleader, encouraging her to get moving and providing aromatherapy to ward off nausea. But what stood out to her was Mona brought three snowflakes that changed colors on her second day. She placed them on the patient whiteboard and gave her a light show. Mona got the light show to the patient since the patient could not attend the Lights A Glow.

“After 75 years, I am no stranger to hospitals, and Mona is the best nurse I have ever had. We were worried about the quality of care they would receive at a small rural hospital. We were nervous; however, right from the start through my discharge, everyone I interacted with was amazing. We consider ourselves fortunate to have had such excellent care at LincolnHealth. We are especially grateful to have Mona as our nurse; she is outstanding.”

For those of us who know Mona, this award is well-deserved; she is the one who connects with her patients on a personal level. She ensures their needs are met and provides personal care to assist them in regaining their dignity. You can hear her encouraging patients to move. “Motion is Lotion” is her mantra. In the spirit of the DAISY Award, skillful and extraordinary acts of compassion are the attributes Mona embodies. Thank you, Mona, for making a difference.
