I couldn’t have asked for better care or a more peaceful end for my mom. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I worked with Cherryl on a very busy day. One of her patients included a woman who had been admitted for a GI bleed of unknown origin. Despite having five patients that day, Cherryl gave this patient devoted attention. She worked tirelessly to give the patient units of blood, to ensure she had good IV access, frequently monitored her pain, and gave her medication with continual updates to the patient’s daughter at the bedside. In the early afternoon, Cherryl attempted to confirm the patient’s treatment plan with her daughter, as it seemed the patient might be taking an unexpected turn for the worse. The patient’s daughter said, “I’m not ready for this, we have to keep trying. I can’t let her go yet.” Cherryl validated this decision and continued to vigilantly monitor and control the patient’s pain and frequently change her ostomy. Near the end of the shift, Cherryl called the doctor and Charge RN into the patient’s room. Her heart rate was in the 40s and her blood pressure was unreadable. A rapid response was called. The patient, who moments ago had been calling for her mother, was found unresponsive with no heartbeat or respirations. Through tears, the patient's daughter stated, “Let her go.” After kissing the patient’s forehead, the daughter exited the room and approached Cherryl. “May I?” she asked pulling Cherryl in for a hug. “I couldn’t have asked for better care or a more peaceful end for my mom. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.” Cherryl’s next-level nursing, care, and compassion truly exemplify human kindness. She is a leader by example, and her patients know how fortunate they are to have her as their nurse.
