She explained to the kids what was happening. She remained at this woman's bedside with her two kids and supported them as they watched their mom pass away.
Over the holidays, the paramedics brought in a woman from home with her two teenage children who had been caring for her. This patient had metastatic breast cancer and was in excruciating pain. There is no other family involved. This woman had entered hospice but was reluctant to take pain meds because she had her kids to care for. She was in multisystem organ failure. The entire ED staff jumped in to help. But her primary nurse took it a step further.
Jamie came in, was calm and reassuring, and explained everything as she went along. She medicated the woman and got her comfortable. She moved the patient to a large room and obtained furniture to accommodate the kids. She explained to the kids what was happening. She remained at this woman's bedside with her two kids and supported them as they watched their mom pass away. Staff determined this woman had a best friend from college who was to take custody of the kids when she passed. She lives 4 hours away. Jamie stayed until 0500 with these kids while the friend drove here. At 0515, Jamie received a text from the daughter, "We're back home, feels weird, thank you for everything".
The next day Jamie remained in contact with the 2 kids, they sent her messages with questions and Jamie sent reassurances. Jamie's next day off she planned to go for a walk on the beach with the daughter before they left for their new home and town. Jamie has exemplified true compassion, comforted the whole person, and supported anyone in need. Jamie Miller is an Extraordinary Nurse.
