Her validating his feelings and listening to him with empathy helped him tremendously. She took the time to listen, show empathy, and lend a hand to hold when he was at one of his worst moments.
My husband has struggled with anxiety and mental illness for quite some time. However, many circumstances led to him declining rapidly and he felt the need to seek treatment in the Emergency Department. This was a very difficult decision for him, and he was very nervous about going to the hospital. When we arrived to the hospital I went to registration and asked to speak to the triage or charge nurse. My husband was very anxious about coming to the facility. Micki came to speak with me and decided it was best that she meet my husband in the vehicle. She was so very kind, compassionate, and caring when she approached my husband. To ensure his pride was preserved she wheeled him straight into the ED room via ambulance entrance and asked that he be registered in the room. My husband was very tearful and Micki sat down and took time to speak with him about how he had been feeling and what led to his decline. She showed so much compassion and even though she said she could not know how he felt but wanted to let him know that he was not the only person going through this. Her validating his feelings and listening to him with empathy helped him tremendously. She took the time to listen, show empathy, and lend a hand to hold when he was at one of his worst moments. In the past, my husband has had some not-so-great healthcare interactions where they did not listen to him or treat him with kindness and care. Micki ensured he was well cared for and treated with utmost care and kindness. He mentioned several times as we were in the ED and days after that he appreciated how well she treated him. It takes a special person to impact someone in that way. Micki is a very special person that touched our hearts on one of our worst days.
