He used our time to tell personal stories about himself or his dad, which took my mind off my serious medical problems. There is no doubt that this played a huge part in my recovery.
I wish to nominate Jim, My nurse on 4 South. I was a Patient for four days in August. Without a doubt the care I received from everyone who assisted in my recovery was superb, but Jim's soft-spoken and calming manner stood out. Jim is not only a caregiver, but an educator as well. As a borderline diabetic, I did not understand the complexities of the disease. Jim explained to me in easily understandable terms using an example of wood burning in a fireplace. He explained how food/blood sugar regulates the body, which I completely understood. Many of the nurses came in, did their job, and were very professional, but Jim's visits to my bedside were more than just professional. He used our time to tell personal stories about himself or his dad, which took my mind off my serious medical problems. There is no doubt that this played a huge part in my recovery. Despite being busy taking care of other patients, when Jim was at my bedside I felt like I was his only patient. He was able to anticipate needs before they even arose, proactive rather than reactive. Shortly after the insertion of my PICC line and the PICC Team had left the floor, my line started bleeding saturating my dressing. There was not a dressing change kit immediately available, but somehow Jim found one somewhere and solved the problem promptly. Jim wears many hats, nurse, educator, problem solver, counselor, and just plain friend when you need one.
