For this particular patient and all her patients, she ensures the Veterans are at the center of her decision-making, and acts to serve the Veterans, ensuring their interests are at the heart of her decisions and work.
Suchada Melnick is a true example of what a nurse in a leadership role should be. I recently had a patient who was undergoing a procedure. This particular Veteran did not receive a call-in preparation for this specific procedure, so he was not educated on the medications he should and should not take. The patient was also having medical issues on arrival to SDS. During the patient’s procedure, it was decided that despite having an intervention, the patient was deemed safe to be discharged the same day. I was concerned and spoke to Suchada about it. Suchada went above and beyond to ensure the patient was safely taken care of. She advocated for the patient to have continued monitoring overnight, because it was in the Veteran's best interest given the circumstances. The Veteran's home life was not manageable given his current medical situation, and he, therefore, needed to stay in the hospital. Suchada advocated for this Veteran, knowing it was the right thing to do for him and for his safety.

She is committed to serving our Veterans and ensuring their safety is first and foremost in her daily work. Suchada collects her data from the patient record, assessment, and the patient, and presents it to the providers in an organized fashion and ensures they understand all the information she is giving them, in order for them to make an informed decision, in the best interest of our Veterans. For this particular patient and all her patients, she ensures the Veterans are at the center of her decision-making, and acts to serve the Veterans, ensuring their interests are at the heart of her decisions and work.

Suchada lives the ICARE values every day, and this day was no different. Suchada compromised with the department that completed the patient's procedure, in that our department would safely care for the patient until an admission bed became available. The patient received the care and monitoring he required and this plan prevented a hold up for other patients within the Syracuse VA, who also needed care. Her commitment to doing the best for all of our Veterans is commendable and she is deserving of the DAISY Award. Our unit and the Syracuse VA are lucky to have Suchada working here and caring for our Veterans. Suchada is a role model for patient advocacy!
