An elderly woman gave Anna a warm hug and repeatedly thanked her profusely. But, Anna did not understand why because she felt she did not do much to help her.
Anna’s commitment to providing compassionate care allows her to make connections with people. She has given her patients the respect and dignity they deserve. While taking care of a male patient with chest pain, she wrote in her clinical reflection:
"I felt bad for this patient…his mom just passed away recently…his divorce from his wife was finalized 2 weeks ago.” The nurses during their shift report “believed he was a drug seeker and faked his pain to get morphine. When I looked at his labs, his Troponin levels had increased in 12 hours since the time he was admitted. That lead me to believe that something really did happen to him, and the staff providing his care did not believe him. I hope the time I spent in here gave him at least a little comfort."
Patient advocacy and best practice are her priorities. Anna empathizes with her patients as an active listener. Anna is a scholar in the nursing honor society Alpha Delta Nu. She demonstrated leadership skills as the Chair in last month’s blood drive. Her effective communication style contributed to its tremendous success. Anna is a role model willing to step outside of her comfort zone. Regardless of circumstances, she is grateful for her clinical experiences. Going to a Chicago area hospital far from home and more chaotic than a suburban hospital, Anna agreed not once but twice to make the most out of this clinical. Her goal was to grow and learn striving for excellence wherever she was.
During winter break, Anna sacrificed everything especially time away from her family to participate in humanitarian efforts in Ecuador. To those who had little to no access to healthcare, she was their access to healthcare. At the health clinic, she did not complain about working long hours outdoors under challenging working conditions. An elderly woman gave Anna a warm hug and repeatedly thanked her profusely. But, Anna did not understand why because she felt she did not do much to help her. However, her care and concern meant everything to this woman. Anna’s genuine humility makes her an exemplary nurse and a valuable asset. The type of nurse you are going to want to hire!
On behalf of the faculty of the ADN program, we want to recognize Anna Jarvis as the DAISY Award recipient for the Class of 2023. Congratulations Anna!
