Melissa laughs with her staff but also knows how to handle the hard stuff too.
Melissa is the epitome of an exemplary leader. She has not only been an inspiration to me, but to many of the staff that work under her. She works hard, she is dedicated to her work, and her passion is undeniable. She gives every bit to her staff and the patients that we see. She only wants what's best for everyone.

In a personal experience, Melissa took over as leader of the Urgent Care system while I was working under her (she was AD) in the ED. I began to have a lot of questions to myself about whether nursing was the right profession for me, and whether I would ever cut it as an ED nurse. She listened to me cry, and she gave me some of the best advice I've ever received. And then she reminded me there were other opportunities out there to shine as a nurse. I knew from that conversation I would try to follow Melissa anywhere. So I moved up to Urgent Care. Ever since I have been a part of this team I have gotten my RN3, completed multiple mini projects, gotten additional training to do fit testing in the department, and am currently in the callbacks roll, where she supports me with all of her heart.

Melissa laughs with her staff but also knows how to handle the hard stuff too. She has a grace about her and in the way she is able to handle the difficulties of being a leader who has great expectations from her staff, but who also knows exactly what they are going through and therefore shows compassion at the same time. I spoke to two of her direct subordinates (ADs) who said she has changed their management styles, their work ethic, and their management intelligence since being under her. She is constantly improving the work environment of those around her. But on top of taking care of her staff, she also prioritizes the patients.

Right now she is working very hard on an initiative to get more of our patients' primary care providers and make sure we close the loop for their care. She picks up additional shifts in the ED just to keep her skills fresh because she is a leader who would never ask anyone to do anything she can't do. She has been a top 100 nurse (I believe) and a Cone-honored nurse in many things. I'm not a wonderful writer, but I can't possibly not try to sing her praises!
