Due to our visitor restrictions, the patient’s young family was not able to visit, but Johnathan advocated for us to be able to let the patient go down by wheelchair in order for the patient to be able to spend some time with her family in the lobby.
I have witnessed Johnathan Dawson show exemplary nursing care beyond the four walls of this hospital for a patient who was admitted to us on our unit. The patient was young and was coming to terms with a very difficult diagnosis. Due to our visitor restrictions, the patient’s young family was not able to visit, but Johnathan advocated for us to be able to let the patient go down by wheelchair in order for the patient to be able to spend some time with her family in the lobby. Watching both the patient's and the family's faces light up as they embraced each other after many days apart brought a tear to my eye. After the patient was discharged, many follow-up appointments including scans followed. Johnathan followed up with the patient and the patient's mother weeks after they had been discharged to make sure that the patient had made it to all appointments. After a lot of communication, he took the time to get in touch with the home healthcare team to ensure that the patient was scheduled. I saw him juggling calls with the patient and their family, and the home health company, all while still actively being a leader on the unit. As a leader myself, I can only dream of nurses that take these types of initiatives and show this type of compassionate care to patients and families even after they have been discharged from our hospital. While I know this patient faces an uphill and tough battle, I know that the personalized, attentive, and follow up care that Johnathan showed while this patient was here on our unit and after they were discharged has truly made an impact on the patient's final outcome. I am very thankful to have this Extraordinary Nurse be a part of our unit.
