It is likely the patient could not have had her last wishes met if this nurse had not spent hours finding resources, problem-solving, and advocating for the patient.
Deborah had a patient with fast-accelerating ALS who wished to drive with her partner halfway across the country to spend some of her last months with extended family. Unfortunately, the patient and her partner left on this road trip without any ALS medication and ended up reaching out to Deborah for help while on the road.

Deborah called their pharmacy chain to try to get the patient her meds and had to escalate to call their insurance to find out what the barrier was to obtaining medication. Afterward, Deborah called the patient's partner while he was on the road and helped him find a specific pharmacy nearby on their trip and gave them helpful instructions on how to solve the medication issue with their insurance. She also gave them more education on ALS and the breathing issues to be aware of. The patient was able to get her medication and successfully arrive in another state to spend time with her family. Deborah connected the patient with a local doctor and was available as a resource for them during their stay.

Months later, the patient and her partner came back to California. Unfortunately, the ALS had progressed significantly, and the respiratory issues worsened. They called Deborah for advice. She educated and supported them to help them make the best and safest choices to safely arrive in California. She managed through the red tape of getting flight clearance from their doctor as well as medical breathing equipment clearance to ensure they wouldn't get stuck in the airport. It is likely the patient could not have had her last wishes met if this nurse had not spent hours finding resources, problem-solving, and advocating for the patient.
