As a neurologist, I often deal with clinical cases requiring infusion therapy. I was seeing a patient who was returning from a tertiary care hospital in another state after an extraordinarily severe and abrupt case of acute motor sensory autoimmune neuropathy. Upon his return to Alaska, his primary care physician had not felt comfortable renewing his IVIG infusions, and he presented to my clinic almost a month behind. These infusions are critical for preventing damage to his peripheral nervous system. I walked over to the JBER infusion clinic and asked if they could possibly work him in that same morning. Captain Gamby cheerfully and effectively moved to take complete ownership of the issue, arranging IVIG infusion for him within an hour. He personally walked down to the pharmacy to obtain the IVIG to reduce any further delays. He also noticed that the dressing on my patient's PEG tube was incorrect and that the skin underneath was red and irritated. He walked over to the inpatient ward to obtain the correct dressing, applying it himself. To reduce repeated needle sticks, he placed a more long-lasting IV so that my patient could return in 3 days for his second infusion and not have to undergo IV placement a second time. He treated my patient with such generosity and kindness, that I continue to hear how grateful he is every time he visits me in clinic. Moreover, my patient absolutely owes his continuing neurologic recovery to the dedication and care that Captain Gamby provided. He treated my patient like a person, going above and beyond to make sure that his care was not only adequate, but exceptional. This is what makes the difference in terms of which neurology patients get better, and which ones don’t.
