The patient had her hair, makeup, and nails done; she was dressed in her cap, gown, and honor cords and walked down the hall with Pomp and Circumstance.
There was a young patient on our unit who was selected as the valedictorian of her college class and was also the Student Body President at her university. She came to us very ill, and her goal was to get well and be discharged so that she could attend her graduation.

As the time came closer it was determined that being discharged would not be advisable. The patient was very depressed because she would not be able to deliver her speech to her class.

Casi and T, along with the help of the 4th Floor staff, coordinated a graduation ceremony for her. The patient had her hair, makeup, and nails done; she was dressed in her cap, gown, and honor cords and walked down the hall with Pomp and Circumstance.

The hall on both sides of the 4th floor was lined with people cheering her on. There wasn't a dry eye in the house. She delivered her valedictorian speech to the staff, her family, and her friends. A reception was held in the family room where refreshments and decorations had been set up.

Doing things like this for patients is just part of what Casi and T do. They care for patients’ bodies and spirits. The patient and her family returned to HRSH to celebrate the presentation of the DAISY Awards. And once again, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house!
