She ensured that Dad and those with him could feel her compassion and empathy.
Melisa has shown so much compassion and love toward not only my dad but our whole family. When my dad was admitted to Tripler and downgraded from the ICU, we saw a rotating group of doctors and nurses. Unfortunately, my dad was at the end of life and awaiting hospice placement. The other nurses were fine and did their jobs effectively but did not go out of their way to make my dad comfortable. We were denied painkillers because he was on comfort care. Even as he struggled to breathe. When Melisa noticed the change in my dad’s breathing from the previous night, she immediately could see his discomfort and put in a request to start morphine. She shared her concern about the change in breathing with our family and explained that it was a sign of his declining health. She explained the purpose of the morphine and what that would not only for pain but for his breathing. In addition to her care for my dad, she went above and beyond for the rest of our family. She ensured that family would be able to stay beyond the visiting time so he wouldn’t be alone. She ensured family was able to be taken care of. Not only did she recognize and address the needs of my dad, but she also took care of our whole family. From finding chairs and recliners to coffee and cookies. She ensured that Dad and those with him could feel her compassion and empathy. She really ensured that comfort care actually provided comfort for my dad and I can not thank her enough for that.
