Tiffany is recognized as a professional who goes above and beyond to provide Veteran-centered care and is giving of her time and energy through her volunteer work outside of her assigned job responsibilities.
It is with great enthusiasm that we nominate Nurse Tiffany D. Hill, RN, for the DAISY Award in the category of excellence. Nurse Hill embodies the spirit of “Influence” through her “capacity… to create a positive effect” in our clinic’s practice through her contact with patients and collaboration with clinic staff. Tiffany is recognized as a professional who goes above and beyond to provide Veteran-centered care and is giving of her time and energy through her volunteer work outside of her assigned job responsibilities.

The Women’s Health Clinic provides primary care services to approximately 2,400 Women Veterans, who are also served by the clinic’s team of mental health providers. Tiffany’s unique position as the sole Mental Health Nurse in the WHC involves responding to warm handoffs from medical staff, addressing same-day appointment requests from patients, and initial triage of urgent and routine mental health treatment requests. Nurse Hill is often the first mental health professional that WHC patients see before meeting with the co-located psychologist or psychiatrist in the clinic. Veterans have consistently identified Tiffany has an affirming and compassionate presence that truly listens to their needs and cares for them and their concerns.

Tiffany’s strengths include her flexibility and ability to think and act quickly when diffusing any conflict or challenges patients may encounter around their access to care. In one instance, Tiffany worked with hospital providers to ensure that a WHC patient was quickly and effectively examined and transferred to the ER to receive treatment for emergent symptoms related to COVID. In the words of the patient who asked that Nurse Hill be recognized for her efforts, “It all started with Nurse Tiffany. She has a genuine compassion for people who are in need. She followed up, made recommendations, and CARED. Nurse ‘Tiffany in Purple’ truly serves our Veterans, she is a gem in the Women’s Clinic and a true representation of the I CARE principles of the VA.”

In countless other instances, Nurse Hill has been known to sit with patients who are in crisis for an hour or more, helping them to feel calm and collected before they leave the clinic. Nurse Hill is also extremely proactive and goes out of her way to follow up with high-risk veterans and to even check in on the well-being of her colleagues.

When you greet Tiffany and ask her how she is doing, you will receive the response, “Blessed, no complaints, how about you?” Regardless of whatever challenging professional situation she may be addressing at the moment. It is a true joy to work with Nurse Hill, a fact that is recognized by many staff outside of our mental health team. When this call for nominations was released, we received multiple requests from colleagues, the WHC Nurse Manager, and the Chief of Women’s Health, to nominate Tiffany for this recognition of her stellar work in our clinic.
