In December of 2022, there was a patient who was on our Outpatient Surgery unit who was extremely anxious and crying randomly, for what she described as no reason. The patient told us that she had been going through these crying episodes for months and didn’t know why. Irela took the time to listen to the patient and speak with her extensively beyond the normal pre-op questions. She went even further by collaborating with anesthesia for calming medications. Most of all, Irela took the time to get a list of doctors who may help to figure out what the real issues at hand were. The patient was not thinking of harming herself with a lot of extra compassion time and listening. Irela was able to get the patient the much-needed help along with some possible solutions. Our patient did come back at a later date and brought Irela and me a care package to say thank you. The patient’s outlook and whole demeanor were greatly improved. She and her husband were extremely grateful. Irela often goes above and beyond to help both patients and coworkers. She is a wonderful and inspiring team member.
