Her kind and caring demeanor allowed her to quickly establish a relationship with patients and families. She cared for critically ill and injured patients along with end-of-life patients with empathy and grace.
Sawsan has a positive attitude and gets along with everyone. She is smart and has great clinical judgement.

I had the pleasure of having Sawsan Hashwi as a student in clinical with me and as her adjunct faculty in her final clinical. I observed her caring for patients and families at Sinai Grace Hospital which serves many vulnerable patients with very complex needs. She provided kind and compassionate care to all patients regardless of their backgrounds. While caring for a patient with stage 5 CKD, Sawsan discovered that the patient had a fall d/t missing her dialysis due to her inability to get a ride to dialysis. She provided the necessary hospital care and met with social work to arrange for transportation for future dialysis and doctor’s appointments. She knew that by helping to put this in place, she would be reducing the potential for readmission which is costly, and more importantly potential untoward effects of missing dialysis.
Sawsan had many favorable interactions with both patients and families. Her kind and caring demeanor allowed her to quickly establish a relationship with patients and families. She cared for critically ill and injured patients along with end-of-life patients with empathy and grace. I received very positive feedback from the nursing staff and other members of the healthcare team and the attending physician.
Throughout the 2 rotations at Sinai Grace Hospital, she demonstrated the Franciscan values on a daily basis. The patient population can be challenging on many levels due to substance abuse, risk behaviors/lifestyles, lack of healthcare literacy, and financial constraints. She always demonstrated respect for all patients regardless of the circumstances that led them to her care. She did her best to educate patients and provide them with resources so that they would have the best possible outcomes. During her rotations, she was able to build on her pre-existing knowledge base and expand her knowledge. She provided evidence-based care and advocated for good patient care. She educated her peers and other members of the healthcare team. Her clinical expertise extended into her scholarly work. She was always prepared for class, wrote excellent papers, and did an excellent quality poster. She was truly one of the best students I have ever had.
