My wife has been treated by hundreds of nurses over the last 10 years dealing with her chronic illness. During that time, it has become easy to identify the all-stars based on a few key talents/traits/etc.

1. Active listening: This is when you are trying to truly understand your patient’s needs. This is accomplished by being engaged with your patient and support team. Taking extra time to learn about your patient and their individual story. This equates in the business world as being a good consultant.

2. Clear concise communication: Taking the time to speak clearly and concisely is critical in all communication and essential in the medical field. The key aspect is verification the patient understood what you’re communicating. Too many times including during this stay we have had nurses that mumble something as they walk away and were left wondering what was said.

3. Professional communication: As a professional a certain level of communication is expected. Even if one feels they are not being treated the best or the patient is wrong, staying professional is essential. If a tough message needs to be communicated it can be handled in a professional manner.

4. Empathy: I understand we are all busy and it is easy to use that as an excuse. However, displaying empathy for patients empowers them to feel better and believe the caregiver truly cares.
