Jan is a nurse who cares about every inch of the nursing profession, she rises to every occasion with clarity, conciseness, and purpose.
Jan Barber is a passionate nurse leader, simulationist, and educator. Her career in nursing began after earning her BSN from the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing in 1982. She continued her education, earning a Master’s degree as a Gerontological Clinical Nurse Specialist from La Roche College, in 1997. Over her 40-year career, Jan has served humanity as a staff nurse working in trauma orthopedics, an Assistant Nurse Manager, a Clinical Education Specialist, and a clinical instructor for the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing. She has served here in the RISE Center at RMU as a nurse educator, simulationist, mentor, and leader for 10 years. She maintains active membership with the Society for Standardized Patient Education (ASPE) and participates in discussions, literature reviews, and presentations at their annual conference. She is a pillar of the ethical treatment of standardized patients and involves herself in the progression of the specialty of simulation with her knowledge and appetite for best practices as they evolve over time. Jan considers herself lucky to have managed to mingle her love for theater into her career by maintaining a robust and rigorous Standardized Patient (SP) program providing rich learning for both our graduate and undergraduate nursing students. Jan is a nurse who cares about every inch of the nursing profession, she rises to every occasion with clarity, conciseness, and purpose. She has left her fingerprint on humanity throughout her nursing career, first by caring for patients at the bedside, and now by ensuring that those who grace our doorsteps here at RMU carry that torch forward with high-quality nursing care. Jan Barber serves the nursing profession as a role model and advocate for ethical nursing practice, one way she has accomplished this here is by teaching our undergraduates how to navigate through hospice care. Jan, I hope this Award reminds you of your dedication and service to others. Thank you for serving our profession with honor and dignity and translating that expectation to our students, staff, faculty, and RMU community with your whole heart.
